KITT Phase One
KITT will take a while to complete and just like the 240SX, I’ve broken the project down into phases with the functionality and the exterior being first because it requires fewer parts to modify and takes the least amount of time.
Sourcing the needed parts on the internet is where I began and surprisingly there are quite a few fabricators making bumpers, scanners, electronics and the interior conversion parts. I also joined a few facebook groups of enthusiasts to get feedback from those that have already completed or are in the process of finishing their replicas. Fortunately, every single part needed to make a KITT replica is available, the only thing I need to do is weed out the low-quality parts from the high-quality parts, but before I get to that step I have to modify the 1989 Firebird with 1982 Firebird/Trans AM parts.
Trans AM Exterior Anatomy
The Trans Am is a styling/performance variation of the Firebird, just as the GT & Cobra are to the Mustang and the Type-X is to the 180SX. The 1982 Trans AM is the period correct car used to build the original KITT cars for the Knight Rider tv show however, I’m using a 1989 base model that will need the following Trans-AM parts before it can be modified any further.
This was a 1982 Firebird rolling chassis with neon-splatter interior. It had the correct rear spoiler, turbo cast wheels, tail lights and rear bumper. The price for the entire car was less than the cost of the wheels alone, so it was a win. At the moment, the last and only part left on the list are the vented front fenders. I found the hubcaps on ebay and the ground effects on facebook.
K.I.T.T. Exterior Anatomy (Season 4)
The custom parts needed to fully convert the exterior of the Firebird to look exactly like KITT will be purchased new and consist of the following:
- Season 4 Front Bumper
- Door Molding
- Tail Light black out Panel
As I mentioned earlier, this replica will take a few years to complete, but in the meantime, parts are being gathered.
